Closer Look at Nvidia Tegra 4

Few weeks ago Nvidia released their next mobile platform, Nvidia Tegra 4 in CES. Previously I rounded up rumors about it and finally it came out to be pretty similar.

Let’s go and take look at official spec of Nvidia Tegra 4 and what is its impact on mobile computing.

Technical Specification

CPU

Nvidia Tegra 4 uses latest 28 mm semiconductor architecture and supports up to 4 ARM Cortex A15 1.8 GHz CPU cores. This is a major improvement compared to 40 mm architecture and ARM Cortex A9 CPU cores in Tegra 3.

CPU L1 cache is 32 KB for instructions and another 32 KB for data. L2 cache is 1 MB. It’s still the same as Tegra 3. And yeah, 4-PLUS-1 battery saving technology continues here as well.

GPU

GPU is the major improvement here and it will definitely be good news for mobile gamers. It has 72 cores GeForce GPU. It’s 6 times faster than Tegra 3 and gives you access to latest Tegra Zone mobile games.

Memory

Speed of memory access has gone up to 12.8 GB/s with LPDDR3 technology. This is 2 times improvement compared to Tegra 3.

Connectivity

This has entire previous connectivity features plus 4G LTE and USB 3.0. These will solve major connectivity problems Tegra 3 had.

Application and Possibilities

Currently only device powered with Nvidia Tegra 4 platform is “Project Shield”. In CES it unveiled its beastly gaming performance. It’s good enough evidence for us to figure out how powerful the Tegra 4 platform is. Soon many other devices will come to market with this platform, specially gaming optimized tablets.

Tegra 4 has 4-PLUS-1 technology to save battery power by processing background tasks in a low power consuming CPU core. Tegra 4 is capable of switching off individual CPU cores to save power depending on the work load. Further 28 mm architecture is a major power saver. All together this SoC will be much less power hungry than Tegra 3. So we have a hope for better battery life in future Tegra 4 powered devices.

Wraping Up

True that this is an amazingly powerful mobile computing platform, yet competition is tight. Qualcomm came up with Snapdragon 800 and Samsung has Exynos 5 Octa. As I think, to stand out in the competition Nvidia Tegra 4 should focus on mobile gaming niche where they have better performance, infrastructure and years of experience.

Other than hardware muscle the major success factor would be better power consumption. There Nvidia Tegra 4 might have a advantage with its power saving technologies. However we have to wait till commercial devices come out for us to get a more accurate picture about that.

Android Fragmentation And What Google And Handset Manufactures Should Do To Solve It?

If you are an Apple iPhone user you know that getting an OS update is not a big deal. Almost all iPhones are getting updates on the same day and it just needs few taps. It’s same with all the iOS devices including iPad and iPod touch.

Android has become the world’s most popular mobile OS. But Android users know that getting a software update for your phone is not as easy as iPhone. Latest version of Android is 4.2.1 but still you can find many phones with many years old Android 2.3 running. The problem here is Android OS is highly fragmented based on more than one factors.

What is Android Fragmentation?

Android is an open source mobile OS developed by Google. That means its source code is freely available for any one. What handset manufactures are doing is design a hardware platform which is compatible with Android OS and produces a handset. But they always modify the source code, especially with themes to deliver a unique branded experience to users.

When you are buying an Android phone from a mobile carrier they are installing a customizable Android with branded start up screens and some applications.

Once the device has a customized version of Android it can’t get updated directly from Google, like iPhones are getting from Apple. This is where the problem is.

When Google is releasing new iterations of Android on the same day they release source code to handset manufactures and developers. If you have a Nexus device with pure Android, you will be updated on the same day but it’s not the case with other devices.

Handset manufactures need some time to figure out the updates in new iteration and check the compatibility of themes and apps they are going to embed into OS. This might take few weeks, maybe few months and lots of effort. If there is a carrier in between, it will add a couple of more weeks.

Due to this complex process handset manufactures keep older models out of the update process. That’s why most of the Samsung Galaxy S II phones are still having Android 2.3. Not only that, if you take a look at statistics, less than 10% of phones has latest Android version.

What Can Google Do?

Google is releasing OTA update and source code on the same day. Nexus devices are getting the update on time while other handsets are waiting for updates. If Google can release the source code earlier, then handset manufactures will get some time to study the code and release the update almost at the same time as Google.

However this will solve only the part of problem. Still handset manufactures won’t like to put effort on older handsets.

What Can Handset Manufactures Do?

The most practical solution would come from handset manufactures side. The major problem here is manufacturer customization. It will require a lot of time and effort. If they can simply install pure Android on all the handsets, Google can push updates at the same time to all the Android devices.

If they need to include customization so badly, they can give that choice to handset user. If he likes customized Android experience he can go for that. If he value timely update rather than customization they can go for pure Android and Google paused updates. Even if Google won’t like to push updates to all the phones, manufactures can do it with much lesser effort.

It’s an Ideal solution. However it would be pretty difficult to achieve. Take a look at above image to get an idea how many handset manufactures are there. Getting all of them in to same page is nearly impossible. But I have some good hope for year 2013.

Do We Really Need 1080p Displays on Mobile Phones?

In the last few months many 1080p Smartphone came in to market, especially in CES. Previously I discussed about Oppo Find 5, HTC Droid DNA and Sony Xperia Z. Those devices are actually creating a new generation of Smartphone.

Here I’m not trying to talk about more 1080p Smartphone. I’m trying to build up a discussion on increasing screen size and resolution of latest Smartphone. Do we really need it? Is it a result of the cold war between Apple and Android world? Let’s go and take a closer look.

Story of Retina Display

Apple was always ahead of time when it comes to display resolution. You can see it in their iMac, MacBook Pro and even in iPad. The original idea of Retina Display came in to the market with iPhone 4. if you take a look at iPhone 3GS’s display it’s pixel density is 165 ppi. Apple increases it drastically in iPhone 4 to 330 ppi.

In that level of pixel density you can’t distinguish pixels in normal viewing distance which is somewhere between 10 -15 inches. Later on many other Smartphone manufactures came up with super sharp displays which have more than 300 ppi of pixel density, by definition they are also retina displays.

If you take a look at latest 5 inch 1080p mobile display they have roughly 440 ppi of pixel density. So definitely you won’t be able to distinguish pixels. You may call it super retina displays.

In human eye, closest focus distance is roughly 3 inches. If you take a retina display that close to the eye, you will be able to distinguish pixels. If you do the same test with a super retina display, still you can’t see distinct pixels. In other words you have no way to see separate pixels with naked human eye.

Major Disadvantage of 1080p 5 Inch Displays

After reading above you must be having a wow feeling about super retina displays. But everything comes with a price. They are power hungry and drains out the battery in no time. After all there is nothing to be surprised of. They wrap up same amount of pixels as HD TV in your living room.

Finally, Do We Really Need It?

Pixel density of the display has nothing to do with color reproduction or level of contrast. Those are defined by display technology and quality of individual pixels. Pixel density is only about the sharpness of displays.

To identify the difference between retina display and super retina display you have to take it very close to your eye, like 3 -4 inches. It’s very unlikely in general usage. Can you imagine someone using a huge Smartphone holding it few inches away from nose?

For that the price we have to pay is poor battier life or huge and heavier batteries.

Yes, we need good processors, massive storage, and sharp displays in Smartphone. But 1080p 5 inch displays have gone way beyond actual user needs and even beyond capabilities of human eye. In return one of the most important factors, battery life is compromised.

This is clearly a result of cold war between Smartphone manufactures and just to make the specification looks good. So of you have a plan to buy a 1080p Smartphone, think twice.

What’s New in Android 4.2 Jelly Bean?

Android 4.2 is out there with the sweet project code code name Jelly Bean. Previously I posted a Android 4.2 rumors round up and expect the project code name to be Key Lime Pie. But Google decided to keep it for next major update.

Most of the previous rumored features are there and few more details to share. If you have a device from New Nexus Family or Galaxy Nexus you must be already enjoying this. Let’s take a closer look and see what is has to offer.

New Features

Sphere Camera

This is one of the most anticipated features in Android 4.2. I tried taking few 360 degrees images and they worked fine. All you have to do is align the camera to start recording and follow the dots. However sometimes it’s making mistakes when stitching images together.

The gallery is also updated to view sphere images. If it’s a sphere image you are getting a new icon below that. Once you click it will take you to Google street view live image viewer. Good improvement and major competitive advantage over other mobile OS.

Quick Settings Panel

Previously it had only one notification panel which you can drop down from the top edge. Now you have two panels and you have two different methods to access that. Pull down the notification bar and click on quick settings icon or pull down notification bar with 2 fingers. There you can see some commonly used controllers such as screen brightness, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, battery power etc.

Lock Screen Widgets

Previously you could unlock the phone to Google Now or to camera. Now they have taken it to next step. You can slide the screen left to access the camera and right to see any customized widgets. You have a separate button to access Google Now below the lock icon.

According to my personal point of view, this is an unnecessary complexity. Previously I could do all these stuff with one controller and now I have several. A lock screen widget consuming a whole page and I have to go through several pages to see them. I’d rather put all of them in my home screen and unlock the phone to see them.

Gesture Typing

This is my most favorite feature here. I have used swipe keyboard before, but this is embedded right in to OS and very polished. Previously I used to be a ‘viewer’ in mobile social media because I was too lazy to comment back and engage with on screen keyboard. Gesture typing changed my world and my social engagement level has gone up overnight.

Clock

Most of the people are talking about all the new android goodness, but I didn’t hear much about new and improved clock. You will notice this right there in lock screen. Now it’s not only a clock, a fully functional stopwatch and countdown timer have been embedded right into it. Slide to left and right to check out these clock features.

In stopwatch you can records laps and share the result in social media. You can add multiple countdown timers and manage them easily for different purposes. Good idea for a kitchen timer.

World clock is another majorly important feature. Here you can add new clock displaying time in another city. All you have to do is click on location icon and check in the cities you need.

Others

Google Now came in to action with android 4.1 and now it’s giving you more information and features. Project butter is still here so interfaces are buttery smooth, for me it’s seems even smoother than before. If you like to mirror your Smartphone display with your HD TV now you have Air Play like feature.

If you are using Nexus 10, there you have multi-user support. So you can share your tablet with many other people and it remembers the setting for each profile, even the progress in games.

Daydream is a new fancy feature. With that you can play an animation or display clock when your phone is in sleep mode. Try this but keep your eye on battery life.

You have new Gmail with new features such as pinch to zoom and swipe to delete.

Wrapping Up

The best thing ever happened to Android so far is sweet Jelly bean. Now it’s in the next level. You have whole lot of new features. This made all the other mobile OS looks like antique and dwarfs them in competition. Sphere camera, sphere viewer, gesture typing, new clock and overall completeness blew my mind.

I was expecting Google engineers to introduce something to improve battery life. There was a rumor about project roadrunner. But I could not find anything about this so far. What’s New in iOS 6?

WWDC was held in last June in San Francisco. There Apple introduced their net version of iOS which is iOS 6. It is major upgrade to core of OS and comes with many new features. They promoted it with the tagline “World’s most advanced Mobile operating system”. iOS came a long way with in 5 years setting many trends in Smartphone world and it’s under Notes of Genius Spotlight today.

Features Highlight

Maps

Due to various reasons such as limited API calls Apple decided to stop using Google maps anymore. Instead they developed their own version of Maps with better features. It’s having all the basic features such as 2D maps, Traffic details and turn by turn navigation with voice. The most interesting feature here is fly over mode. It’s giving photorealistic view of 3D buildings and I have never seen such in any other map application.

Apple stated that this Map application is developed in house from scratch. Geographic data they have used is purchased from TomTom, a very popular navigation device manufacture. In addition they have acquired map data from Open Street maps as well.

Siri

Siri is getting smarter down the time. Now she can launch applications as well. Further she is getting smarter and more human. Usage of location based data is improved and optimizing the response accordingly.

Facebook Integration

Previously there was no direct Facebook integration for iOS. Now you can enjoy seamless Facebook integration with iOS 6. You can enable synchronization for contact and event. Once you join an event it will be displayed in iPhone’s calendar. On configuration all Facebook contact will be displayed in iPhone’s contact list.

Phone

In a Smartphone, phone is just an application. Whenever you want to make a call you have to open it. In iOS 6 phone application is improved in several ways. Just think that you are receiving a call and you are busy. What you can do with new features is, you can send SMS or reject the call and tell the phone to remind later to call back.

There is a Do not disturb mode and once it enabled it won’t notify you for call or SMS. You can enable this in a given time or for given group of contacts.

Applications

There are several application comes in built with iOS 6 such as Passbook, Email, FaceTime and Safari Browser.

Passbook is letting you to store all your cards and other documents and get alerts when you can user them. On proper configuration you can get location based alert when you visit department store reminding you to use your customer loyalty card.

Email application is improved and now it’s letting you to attach video and images very easily. In addition there is a new feature called VIP inbox to categorize important emails. Entire emails you are getting and receiving will be sync with iCloud as usual.

FaceTime is now capable of utilizing mobile data connection to make video calls and send receive files during a conversation. Safari browser also tightly integrated with iCloud and having full screen landscape mode and offline reading.

Wrapping Up

iOS, the world most advanced mobile operating system according to Apples promotions, but I seriously doubt it. Yes, it was the most advanced mobile OS but not anymore. If you are an android user you must be enjoying almost all of the new features in iOS 6 for years. Only interesting thing you will find in iOS is Siri and its advanced voice recognition.

Even if you take a closer look in to new map application, it need lot more polishing up, specially for performance. When you are trying fly over view there is a huge lag. Further it’s not giving detailed maps of all countries like Google maps.

Personally I believe Apple should work harder to present some hot cake to their fans like they always did for last 4 years rather than introducing features which are already there in other products.

Google Maps for Android – Finally Officially Offline

Previously I was talking about offline features of Google maps in Android. There we figured out how to save a specific area of a map for offline usage. But for this you had to enable Lab feature and use it at your own risk.

With the latest version of Google Maps for Android, you don’t have to use it as a lab feature. Now t comes to you as offline maps officially integrated with Google Maps app.

How to Use Offline Maps?

  • First you must get the latest version of Google Maps for Android.
  • For that you have to go to Google Play -> My apps and update it.
  • Now you are good to go. Open Google maps and go to the area which you need to save as Offline map.
  • Click on the Options button down there and go to Make Available Offline.
  • Then you will get a view port and other area will be darkened. Map area in the view port will be saved for offline viewing.
  • You can move, zoom in and out to capture the required area.
  • Maximum allowed offline map size is 50 – 100 MB. If you select larger area, whole map will not be saved.
  • You can see the map size when you are zooming in to select required area.
  • Finally click done. App will start downloading the select maps are and it will be available for offline viewing.
  • You can access and manage offline maps in My Places -> Offline.

Wrapping Up

Google have done major improvements to previous lab feature PreCache Map Area. The most important thing is you can freely select the map area to be saved by moving and zooming. Then you can easily access the maps under my places. Everything is perfectly integrated.

However, if you need to search the map it won’t work with offline maps. For that you must have data connectivity.

This would be great for aviation to save lots and lots of mobile data usage. When you are going through sub way where you have no mobile data connection still you can view maps on your Smartphone. Nature lovers, when you walk away from civilization never forget to save the map to find your way.

What is WaterFox Project?

Web browser is one of the most used applications among most computer, Smartphone and tablet users. There are various browsers competing in the battle of web browsers. You may have your own personal favorite, but according to my study Safari is the best in Smartphone and Tablets while Google Chrome hold the crown in desktop computers.

When I was stumbling across the WWW I came across with a new web browser, a new entrant to browser battle that comes with an interesting name, WaterFox. Let’s go and see what it has to offer.

What’s Special about WaterFox?

WaterFox is using same popular Mozilla engine which is also used in FireFox browser. But there is a difference, a good difference. It is optimized to work with 64bit hardware platforms. Most of the computers today have 64bit hardware, but most of the browsers are not getting advantage out of it.

The magic here is it work with previous 32bit plug-ins as well as specifically 64bit optimized plug-ins. With all these WaterFox is ought to have awesome performance, page rendering and multi-tasking. However I’m not happy till I do a benchmark test and page loading test. Let’s see if this new WaterFox is performing as good as it says on papers.

WaterFox browser claims that it’s utilizing 64bit hardware and making the browsing experience super speedy. By looking at benchmark results you will figure out that it’s not the case. Even if you consider the browser load time, page load time and other operations I didn’t notice any significant performance improvement.

WaterFox project confirms that Mozilla Engine need lot more work before it  could beat Chromium Engine. Even after 64bit optimization, its way behind in many aspects. There was a time people were using FireFox because of its massive plug-in support. But today it has turned upside down. Chrome Web Store has more number of extensions as well as applications.

As a conclusion WarerFox project is not making any significant changes to the big picture of battle of Web browsers. It’s only paper fast, not in real life. It need lot more unique features and polishing up to make it’s mark in browser battle field.

Edit MP3 ID Tags with MP3Tag

When you are on your PC or laptop you can simply click on a MP3 file and play it with the default media player. But when you are using a portable MP3 player or your Smartphone it may not be as easy as that. In order to organize the MP3 files those players use some meta data tags in MP3 files such as Album and Artist.

But most of the time meta tags in MP3 files do not give the accurate information to portable MP3 players to sort them. In that case the file organization will be even messed up and you won’t be able to enjoy your music freely.

Edit MP3 tags one by one is not a practical solution. You need a bulk editor. Of course you can use property window in Windows 7, but sometimes it doesn’t work for bulk editing. Here is a simple piece of software which you can use to edit MP3 ID tags easily.

How to use MP3Tag?

  • Download and Install MP3tag.
  • Open application and it will take you to home screen.
  • Now you have to import MP3 files you need to edit tags. Easiest way is drag and drop.
  • You can drag and drop files one by one or simply drag a whole folder.
  • Now you can see the file list in the window.
  • Once you click on the file in the left side panel you can see already existing tags. You can simply edit them.
  • If you want to bulk edit tags select all the required files and edit the tags.
  • Finally click save and you are done.
  • Now move the MP3 files to MP3 player, it will sort them using tags accurately.

Special Tips

  • You can set the cover image for MP3 files and it will be displayed when you are playing the file in some MP3 players.
  • If you want to change the file name using tags or change tags using file name, there are options for that in tool bar.
  • MP3tag software supports variety of file formats such as WMA, AAC, MP4 and OGG.

MP3tag is a very useful piece of software with realizable operations. Interfaces are well engineered and user friendliness is at a optimum level. Its features are rich and I really like the idea of creating tags based on file name as it’s very useful.

Android jelly bean 4.2 came out with new nexus family and recently rolled out to Nexus 7 as well as Galaxy Nexus. I’m really impressed with the new features it offered even though they are kind of fancy. However primary expectation in Android Jelly Bean 4.2 is improved battery life.

Previously I ran a battery life test for Android Jelly Bean 4.1 on my Galaxy Nexus and result was impressive. It could last a full day with heavy usage including gaming and HSDPA connectivity. Once I see the update notification for Android Jelly Bean 4.2, the first thing came to my mind was even better battery life. But in reality, it’s not the case. Here we go with the battery life report for Android Jelly Bean 4.2 on Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

During this test my Wi-fi was always on and HSDPA was not used. The cell reception at my office is great and fills out all 5 tabs. My usage style is not significantly different from previous test. Mainly I was using social media, web browser, Angry Birds, Gmail, Evernote and Calendar. Throughout the test screen brightness was set to automatic and environment was artificially lit indoors.

Here we go with the screen shot I got when battery life reached 4%. It’s hopelessly low 12h 53m compared to 1d 3h 58m in Android Jelly Bean 4.1.

The main battery consumer, massive display was on for 3h 24m.

Other than display there was no significant battery consuming processes recorded in battery power consumption log.

What Could Be the Reason?

Android Jelly Bean 4.2 is mainly optimized for new Nexus 4. It has bigger 2100mAh battery and power saving Snapdragon S4 Pro platform. So it could be a reason for it to have a very low battery life in Galaxy Nexus. However this is only a part of the reason, not all of it!

I said that because new Nexus 4 also has the same poor battery life problem though it’s not worse as in Galaxy Nexus. So it has to be something to do with the OS background services. They have added many new things and they could be half baked. It makes sense since many people have noticed that significantly higher power consumption when phone is idle.

If you have enabled NFC, you will notice it’s a major contributing factor to drain the battery out. However it could be temporary solved by disabling it.

This is not the only issue in Android Jelly Bean 4.2. There are some problems with screen auto brightness adjustment, stability inconsistencies, Bluetooth audio issues etc.

All these says that we can expect Android Jelly Bean 4.2.1 really soon.
