Sleep vs Hibernate in Windows 7

If you are using a laptop, you must be keeping a close eye on battery life when you are on the move. And you must be taking several steps to save battery power. You may reduce the screen brightness, kill background processes, hibernate it or put it in to sleep.

Recently I have noticed that many of the laptop users asking this same question again and again in many online discussion groups. “What is the difference between Sleep and hibernate?” This note is to clarify all the doubts about them.

sleep-vs-hibernate-in-windows-7-8687528

Sleep Mode

Sleep mode shutdown main power consuming component such as display, HDD and wi-fi. But still it keeps the memory alive. It partially shuts down the processor too. The most important thing to know here is Sleep mode consumes battery. So when you are in sleep mode, still battery life goes down, but very slowly.

What will happen when you put your laptop in to sleep mode while you are rendering a 3D project or something similar? In that case the process will be stopped, but not terminated. Once your computer comes out of Sleep mode it will resume from where it stopped.

If this happen during a download, the situation will be different. If it supports resume, no problem you can resume from where you stop. It’s same with BT download as well. But if your download doesn’t support resume, it will be permanently terminated. You will have to restart.

Hibernate

Hibernate actually shutdown your computer and cut off power to all components. It’s same as pressing shutdown button except it save a snapshot of your memory in HDD. Next time you boot up computer it will look for hibernate data. If they are available, it will restore your computer to last working setup.

When your laptop is in hibernate mode, it’s not consuming battery power at all. However it will take some time to come back to live from hibernate. It will be longer than sleep-to-live time but shorter than boot up time. In the case your laptop battery goes off, it will automatically go to hibernate.

When to Use Them?

If you are leaving your laptop for few minutes, sleep works great. Once you come back, within a second you can get it back to live. You can set sleep mode on “close lid” action in power options. As default configuration, it ask for password before coming back to live from sleep mode. This make sure no one will use your laptop while you are away.

Hibernate is good if you are leaving your laptop for several hours, yet there are some pending work. Hibernate shutdown the computer completely, but when you get it back to live, restore previous working environment.

If you have ongoing processes such as 3D rendering or a download, no point of using either. In that case what you can do is lock the computer, switch off the monitor when you are away to prevent unauthorized access and save power.

Microsoft Surface Pro – Tablet Replacing Laptop

We are few weeks away from the official Windows 8 release. You might have already tried the consumer preview and release candidate. I tried it on my laptop and didn’t see much improvement than Windows 7 except the metro UI.

After few days with Windows 8 I figured out it’s not designed to work with keyboard and mouse. All the controllers, gestures and total metro UI is carefully designed to work with multi touch display. If you say “Win 8 suck” after trying it on your Laptop, give it another chance with a tablet. I’m pretty sure you will change your mind.

microsoft-surface-pro-tablet-replacing-laptop-9806647

Versions of Windows 8

There are 2 versions of Windows 8, Pro and RT. Win 8 RT is capable of running on top of mobile browsers such as ARM. But supports only Metro apps and won’t be able work as a laptop. Windows 8 Pro is a full desktop OS, support all conventional software application, still designed to work with touch displays. A little question here, where can I find desktop PC with touch screen?

It’s clear that survival of Windows 8 Pro would depend on new category of devices. They will be portable, look like tablet but will be having specification of Laptops. Finally with Windows 8 Pro Tablets are ready to replace Laptops.

Many manufactures have already introduced Windows 8 Pro tablets. But the most attractive device I came across so far is Microsoft’s very own device. Microsoft Surface Pro is under NOG spotlight today.

Specification Spotlight

Design

It’s having a design of tablet and constructed with magnesium alloy, reminds me of professional DSLR cameras. It must be highly durable and protective. It’s having multi touch, scratch resistant capacitive screen in front. In addition there is a front facing camera as well. Thickness is 13.6 mm and weight is 903 g.

microsoft-surface-pro-design-2868091

In sides you can find USB port, HDMI port, expandable storage ports etc. In back panel there is a primary shooter as well as Wi-fi antenna. Kick stand is a cool concept and built in to the device body itself. As add-ons you can get a leather keyboard cover or full keyboard cover with magnetic connector.

Display

Its display is 10.6 inch IPS panel with resolution 1920 x 1080 px which will give it 208 ppi of pixel density. They have configured everything to its sweet point, right size, best resolution and decent sharpness.

Going beyond traditional tablet display, Surface Pro is having a digital pen which you can use to draw things on screen. Microsoft has develop special technology to distinguish touch of pen and hand to avoid noisy inputs.

microsoft-surface-pro-digital-pen-2239261

Processor and Storage

The processor is the main thing this device makes lot better than other tablets and let it stand side by side with laptops. It’s Intel CORE i5 Ivy Bridge processor with still unknown clock speed. This will give a perfect platform to run full scale desktop OS and applications.

Amount of RAM is still unknown but it will be at least 4 GB DDR3 to meet with ultra book standards. Internal storage is 64 / 128 GB SSD. If you want more storage you have options of microSD, microSDHC and microSDXC. If you need way bigger storage get an external USB 3.0 terabyte HDD.

Camera

There is a primary shooter at back and front facing camera as well. The specification is not released yet, but some features are revealed. It’s capable of recording 1080p video and 22 degrees slanted. So it will be having straight view when kick stand is on.

microsoft-surface-pro-camera-8197353

Connectivity

It’s having high power MIMO Wi-fi antenna built in to deliver super speedy connectivity. There are no signs of LTE or 3G radio, but it’s having GPS with navigation.

Battery Life

The capacity of the battery is not released but it’s expected to work 8 hours with connectivity on. However, you have to wait till it comes to market to get a clear picture about actual battery life.

Wrapping Up

The magic here is, this is a full scale PC, though it looks like a tablet. It’s having Ivy bridge processor and Windows 8 Pro. So you can forget that it’s a tablet and do whatever you used to do with your desktop or laptop, plug a printer, and connect external HDD or anything.

If you like to use this as your primary PC, it’s highly possible. All you need to do is attach a big monitor through HDMI port, plug USB mouse and keyboard. When you leave home you can simply unplug them all and take only the tablet.

Sometimes ago I was talking about Laptops replacing desktop and Tablet replacing Laptops.

There I mentioned that Laptop can easily replace a desktop but tablets need lot more work before they replace laptops. But now things have turned upside down. Windows 8 is few weeks away and we are about to enjoy devices that only looks like tablets but full scale PCs inside. Now I’s have to say within few weeks laptops will get replaced by this new category of tablets.

Microsoft Surface Pro is not the only Windows 8 Pro tablet out there. Many other manufactures such as Samsung, Acer and Asus has come up with amazing products to competitive market. Stay tuned, they will be featured on NOG in the next few days.

What is Cloud Gaming?

If you love games, the first thing you would need is a PC or Gaming console. In PC there are much more options, power as well as expandability. So most of the hard core gamers go for PCs. But there is one major problem.

You will need a PC with powerful hardware such as 6 core Intel Core i7 CPU at GeForce GTX 670 GPU, 16 GB DDR3 RAM, a lightning speed SSD and all the goodness. Yeah, now you can be happy, but for how long? After a couple of months you may need another GPU to play the latest games in full HD quality with 60 FPS. This is a never ending process.

To save your day and let you play full HD quality games even in an average computer, laptop, tablet or even Smartphone, Cloud gaming came in to the picture. Let’s go and see how it works.

what-is-cloud-gaming-2286018

How Cloud Gaming Works?

Generally the graphic rendering of a game is using native hardware. That’s why you need latest and greatest CPU and GPU PC. And that’s why you can’t play your favorite PC game on your low spec laptop and can’t even dream of playing them in your shiny Tablet or Phone.

In Cloud Gaming everything runs on a cloud computing infrastructure. Your controller signals from Keyboard, mouse, game pad etc. will be sent to the game running on the cloud and rendered video will be streamed to your device. As long as you have a decent broadband connection with minimum pinging time, everything will happen smoothly.

how-cloud-gaming-works-4595359

Pros and Cons of Cloud Gaming

The best thing here is you don’t need a muscle PC to play games in full HD quality. You can spend that money to buy high end gaming controller, keyboard or mouse.

You don’t have to install games on your hard drive. A simple light weight cloud gaming client would be enough to stream rendered video and send control signals. The actual game is installed and running on the cloud. So you have the freedom to continue the same game on laptop, tablet or Smartphone.

When it comes to money factor, you don’t have to buy game DVDs here. It will be subscription based service, something similar to cable TV service.

The dark side is everything depends on the internet connection. A poor quality internet connection would reduce gaming performance significantly. And it will be highly bandwidth intensive, same as HD video streaming. So you have to keep a close eye on bandwidth cap.

high-speed-broadband-5814023

What are the available Cloud Gaming Platforms?

The idea of cloud gaming was here for couple of decades. Back in 2000 G Cluster was the first company to demonstrate this concept as a real life application. Then many other companies joined including CryTech, Cloud Union, Gaikai etc. But they could not reach large number of gamers due to half baked technology and poor broadband connections.

Luckily, the situation is changing step by step.

Microsoft released next generation Xbox One which support partially cloud based game rendering. They are investing lots of money to get cloud gaming infrastructure in shape.

NVidia Grid is another great cloud gaming platform. They have manufactured hardware, game development API and client software as well. Any company which is interested in providing cloud gaming service, can buy NVidia Grid severs, put them in a server rack, install cloud games on it and provide the service to customers.

nvidia-grid-cloud-gaming-platform-8577911

Finally

The problems cloud gaming had in early stages are no more. Today we have high speed internet connections with unlimited or big enough caps. When it comes to cloud computing infrastructure, they also had few leaps and today we are streaming video and audio with different services.

So why not Cloud Gaming? Soon you will be able to enjoy high end gaming performance spending much lesser money on any device you have.

Join the discussion in the comment section below and tell me what you think about cloud gaming.

What’s New in Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean?

Google is rolling out next iteration of Android to Nexus devices. Version number is 4.2.2 and it’s a very minor iteration. Still the code name is Jelly bean. However its kind of unusual they started with Galaxy Nexus, then to Nexus 7, Nexus 10 and finally to Nexus 4.

If you didn’t get the OTA yet, you can manually update it using a custom recovery. Google has published all the factory images here.

whate28099s-new-in-android-4-2-2-jelly-bean-2975246

What are The New Features?

In the first look you won’t be able to identify any differences. It’s smooth as usual thanks to project butter and overall look and feel is exactly the same.

But if you try downloading an app you will notice that in the notification area it’s showing time remaining under the progress bar.

android-4-2-2-jelly-bean-app-download-2098081

In quick access panel there is nothing visually different, but functionally. Now you can tap and hold Wi-Fi and Bluetooth switches to enable and disable them without going in to settings menu. Airplane mode still works with a single tap. These sort of inconsistencies are not good for smooth user experience.

Other than these there are new sound notification for wireless changing and low battery.

Android 4.2.2 is less about features and more about security. There are several deep core level security improvements including secure USB debugging. You can read more about that here in official Android developers’ blog.

Most probably this is the last incremental update for Android 4.2. By around next May or June we will be able to experience the next major version of Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie.

  • Mobile Device: Samsung Galaxy Nexus
  • Mobile OS: Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2

Try new Android 4.2.2 Jelly bean on your device and join the discussion in the comment section below.

What is BitTorrent Live?

Think about a situation where you are downloading a huge file. Your download manager is utilizing the connection between file server and your computer. It may create multiple connections and download the file in fastest possible way.

But in internet every computer has connections between each other. We call them peer to peer connections. BitTorrent protocol is designed to utilize those P2P connections and share huge files over internet more efficiently. Here there is no single server. Every computer is a client and a severe at the same time. It’s downloading the file from many other computers and uploading what it already downloaded to many other computers.

We are using this everyday to download huge files. Previously I talked about how to speed up BitTorrent downloads as well.

Now this technology has evolved further, going beyond file sharing to live video streaming. Lets go and take a closer look into BitTorrent live.

what-is-bittorrent-live-6845763

How BitTorrent Live Works?

The idea is simple. The usual BitTorrent protocol is upgraded to share stream videos. Same as file sharing, here we don’t have a single server and many clients connected to it. The broadcaster sends the video stream out and viewers receive it and re-broadcast what they already downloaded. This is going to save lots of upload bandwidth for broadcaster.

Yeah, the next big question, will be there be a significant delay. Of course, there has to be. But protocol is optimized to make it low as 5 seconds. However it might be longer in practical applications. We have to wait for some time, till this goes to public to check that.

How to Watch?

  • Go to BitTorrent live web page.
  • Download BitTorrent Live client, install and run it.
  • Again go back to BitTorrent live web page, scroll down. There you can watch few test broadcasts.
  • Make sure you have upgraded your browser and flash payer to latest version.

How to Broadcast?

You can join the waiting list to be a broadcaster in BitTorrent live. For that click here, enter your email and sign up. Down the time you will get a chance to be a broadcaster.

Competition with Other Services

Lost of features in BitTorrent live may sound familiar to you. If you have to do a live video broadcast, what is the server you are going to use? You have several options such as UStream and Google+ Hangout. These services are not utilizing P2P connectivity, but it’s not a burden to broadcaster because service provider handles it for you.

Google+ Hangout let many people to join hangout and millions of others can watch it live in YouTube live. It’s already a very polished product and even US president used it several times to communicate with public.

So the competition is pretty tight for BitTorrent live. They have to offer something unique and very powerful to take existing live broadcasters away from Google+ hangouts and UStream.

HTC One with Nexus Experience

If you ask me the BIG question, “What is the best phone in the word?” I always had to say “It depends”. Now HTC One is here and I don’t have to say that any more. From the construction, display, processor, camera, connectivity to OS it screams uniqueness and quality.

In Google I/O 2013 Google took a new step to expand Android Nexus experience. They put pure vanilla in to one of the most popular and powerful Smartphone, Samsung Galaxy S IV.

True, Galaxy S IV is powerful but it’s way behind compared to HTC One’s aluminum uni-body, UltraPixel camera etc. So many people expect HTC One to come out with pure Android soon.

Once HTC said that it won’t happen, but couple of days after, Google officially announced that it will happen. Kind a weird, but the good news is, it’s happening! Soon we all will be able to enjoy pure vanilla in THE best Smartphone ever.

htc-one-with-nexus-experience-3835414

Good Things about Nexus Experience HTC One

The main thing is, for the first time we will have a Nexus phone that feels really good in hands. Galaxy Nexus feels pretty good but Nexus 4 was not so. Even Galaxy S IV is still plastic. So HTC One will be a whole new experience to all Nexus fans.

In past few years phone manufactures were too busy increasing number of mega pixels in cameras. But HTC took a radical step to decrease number of pixel, make sensor bigger to increase pixel pitch. The result is awesome low light performance. There is no other mobile camera which can do the same. Now you’ll be able to use this camera to shoot sphere photo with stock Android camera app.

Finally your non-removable blink feed wont bug you anymore. You will have the freedom to use any launcher you’d like to use. Say bye to bloat wear.

Finally

The price tag of Nexus experience HTC One is USD 599. It’s $50 lesser than Nexus experience Galaxy S IV. Unbelievable! Good things come with cheaper price tag. Same as Galaxy S IV it will come out with an unlocked bootloader.

If you already have a HTC One, you have nothing to worry about. Google will probably release stock ROM. You’ll be able to flash it on any HTC One and enjoy sweet pure Android.

How to Add Automatic References in Microsoft Word?

When you are in academic world, you will have to write lots of reports and research papers may be as a student or as an Academician. No matter what, you have to follow a set of standard rules when you produce such a document. Mainly it must not be plagiarized and should include references.

Most of the cases what you would do is insert references according to the guidelines manually. Of course you can do that for “In-text referencing”. But at the end of the document you have to include “Bibliography” which contains further details of in-text references. There you will run in to a problem unless you manually maintain a list of references that you mentioned as in-text references.

To solve all of the above problems you can use the most used document editing software “Microsoft Word”. There you can totally automate referencing and their standard formatting, with no hassle and much lesser effort.

Steps to Follow

In Text Reference

  • Open a New Microsoft Word document
  • Finish writing the paragraph after referring the original source.
  • Collect the relevant information of original source
  • Move the cursor to the position where you need in text references
  • Go to References in ribbon
  • Citation and Bibliography -> Insert Citation -> Add new Source

add-new-source-8900811

  • Select Type of Source and fill the relevant fields

type-of-source-6837883

  • Click OK to add in text reference
  • If you want to add an Existing source, it will be appear in “Insert Citation” drop down menu

  • To change the referencing Style use the “Style” drop-down menu.

style-4607234

Bibliography

  • After you completing your document go to end of document where you should include Bibliography
  • Go to References->Insert Citation and Bibliography -> Bibliography -> Select a suitable style

bibliography-7933022

  • Bibliography will be auto generated based on in text references you have used in document.
  • If you add “in text reference” after adding “Bibliography” you can right click on Bibliography section and Update Fields.
  • Hardware: Intel Core i5 2nd Gen // 4GB DDR2
  • OS: Windows 7 Home Premium // 64 Bit
  • Microsoft Office: 2007

Tips

Manage Sources

All the sources you add in your computer will be go in to a master file where it keep entire set of sources you have ever used. You can access the source master list by following below path

References -> Insert Citation and Bibliography -> Manage Sources

manage-sources-4156215

If you have any frequently using sources, you can get them to current list from mater list without re entering all the details. In the same window you can add a new source as well. All the sources will be saved as a XML file in below folder.

C:Users{Your User Name}AppDataRoamingMicrosoftBibliography

If you need to keep your sources even after you format your PC, you can manually back up them in another safe location.

Where is Harvard Referencing?

Most of the academic institute asks their students to follow Harvard Referencing. But it’s not there in References -> Style. Still you can add Harvard referencing style to Microsoft Word by following below steps.

  • Download this file
  • Unzip the file. In there you will be able to find lots of referencing style files (.XSL files).
  • There are few Harvard referencing styles as well. I have used “HarvardLeeds.XSL” in here. However according to your institutional standards you may select the suitable one.
  • Move the selected referencing style file to C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice12BibliographyStyle
  • Restart Microsoft Word. Then you will be able to see Harvard referencing (Or any other you selected) in Style drop-down menu.

harvard-referencing-2840918

I hope this will be a big time saver for most of the academic students as well as professionals. If you know more about Referencing in Microsoft Word please share it here.

Nvidia Tegra vs Qualcomm Snapdragon – The SoC Cold War

Mobile computing platforms had an unbelievable growth in past few years. Its way faster than the growth of desktop computers and even gaming consoles. Thanks to that we can enjoy super speedy multimedia and gaming experience in Smartphone and tablets.

The magic of this growth is in SoC (System on Chip) architecture. It wraps up all the important components in a mobile device in to one integrated circuit.

There are several popular companies manufacturing mobile SoCs. Apple has their A series, Samsung has Exynos, Nvidia has Tegra and Qualcomm has Snapdragon. Out of all these Ax and Exynos are used only in manufacturer’s own devices. But Snapdragon and Tegra platforms are used by many other device manufactures. So Qualcomm and Nvidia is in a cold war in SoC market to gain more territory.

nvidia-tegra-vs-qualcomm-snapdragon-the-soc-cold-war-2991862

Bit of History

Nvidia introduced their very first Tegra chipset back in Q1 2008 and it was Tegra APX 2500. It had 600 MHz CPU, image processor and DDR memory access. Then they came a long way through Tegra 2, Tegra 3 – the most popular one and in CES 2013 they introduced Tegra 4 with the tag line “World’s fastest mobile processor”.

The story of Snapdragon processor goes back to 2007 with Snapdeagon S1 MSM7225 chipset. It had 528 MHz CPU, software rendered graphics and DDR memory access. Then they came through Snapdragon S2, S3, and the most popular Snapdragon S4. In CES 2013 they also introduced new versions of chipset called Snapdragon 600 and the most powerful Snapdragon 800.

Nvidia Tegra 3 vs Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro

In the year 2012 the war was between Snapdrgaon S4 Pro and Tegra 3. Lets go and take a look at benchmark results.

nvidia-tegra-4-vs-qualcomm-snapdraon-s4-pro-3813831

Snapdragon S4 Pro

CPU: 1.5 GHz // Quad Core // Krait

GPU: Adreno 320

RAM: 2 GB DDR3

Quadrant: ~7600

An Tu Tu: ~13800

GL Benchmark (Egypt, Off-screen): 132 fps

Tegra 3

CPU: 1.5 GHz // Quad Core // Cortex A9

GPU: GeForce (12 Core)

RAM: 1 GB DDR3

Quadrant: ~3500

An Tu Tu: ~8900

GL Benchmark (Egypt, Off-screen): 63 fps

Yeah! That is a huge difference and Snapdragon S4 Pro won with colors.

But what is the reason for this difference. Both the devices have pretty similar hardware configuration. The secret is Krait CPU architecture invented by Qualcomm. This results show that it’s way better than Cortex A9 architecture.

Nvidia Tegra 4 vs Qualcomm Snapdragon 600

In 2013 they meet again with latest and greatest inventions. This time the war is between Snapdragon 600 and Tegra 4. Here are the benchmark results.

nvidia-tegra-4-vs-qualcomm-snapdragon-600-2018517

Snapdragon 600

CPU: 1.7 GHz // Quad Core // Krait 300

GPU: Adreno 320

RAM: 2 GB DDR3

Quadrant: ~12500

An Tu Tu: ~24600

GL Benchmark (Egypt HD, Off-screen, 1080p): 34 fps

Tegra 4

CPU: 1.9 GHz // Quad Core // Cortex A15

GPU: GeForce (72 Core)

RAM: 2 GB DDR3

Quadrant: ~16500

An Tu Tu: ~36300

GL Benchmark (Egypt HD, Off-screen, 1080p): 57 fps

Ohh yeah this time Tegra 4 wins over Snapdragon 600. But game is not over yet. Snapdragon 800’s benchmark is yet to come and it’s expected to be 40% faster than Snapdragon 600. So they have a good chance of beating Tegra 4.

The game is on! In 2012 Qualcomm won and so far in 2013 Nvidia holds the crown. Let’s sit back and enjoy this SoC cold war. I’m pretty sure we will be able to see more cool stuff from both sides.
