New Google Nexus Family

The most anticipated Google event was scheduled on October 29th. But unfortunately they had to cancel off it due to extreme weather conditions caused by super storm Sandy. This disappointed worldwide android lovers who were looking forward to witness a great event.

With all these distractions Google decided to give a good reason for Android lovers to be happy. They officially released the next Nexus family online, through their official web site. If you visit Google Nexus website, you will be able to see 3 brand new nexus devices, Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10. They have great branding, great performance as well as Great price tag.

Let’s take a closer look in to new and complete Nexus family.

new-google-nexus-family-3984652

New Nexus Devices

Nexus 4

This is the most anticipated, most rumored and most leacked device in Nexus family. This comes out as a successor to previous Galaxy Nexus. Manufacturing partner has changed from Samsung to LG. The device has a great design, great hardware configuration and latest Android 4.2 as expected. Price tag is way lower than expected and it’s only $299 for 8GB model and $349 for 16GB Model.

nexus-4-5412146

Nexus 7

They have discontinued 8GB version of Nexus 7, a wise move. Now you can buy 16/32GB models. Pricing is same as previous 2 models, only re assigned to new upgraded models. Other than storage, all the other specifications are same as before.

There is a new member in Nexus 7 line up which is a HSDPA enabled device. This was one of the major drawbacks in Nexus tabs and now it’s been solved. You can enjoy data connectivity on the go without depending on Wi-fi hotspots and tethering. Its price tag is $299, again amazingly low.

nexus-7-1043435

Nexus 10

This is the biggest surprise in this product launch. Nexus 10 tab manufactured by Samsung combining many of new technologies such as cortex A15 CPU, Exynos chipset and ultra sharp 10 inch 2K display. (2560x1600px / 300ppi) Price tag is $399 for 16GB model and $499 for 32GB model.

nexus-10-1679642

This is a device worth taking a better and closer look. A detailed analysis of Nexus 10 will come up soon.

Wrapping Up

One of the major problems Android OS has is, its fragmentation. Users have to wait till manufactures release their updates after all the UI customization. So most of the Android lovers started moving toward Nexus branded device with pure Android. In my pocket I have a Galaxy Nexus.

Galaxy Nexus is a complete mobile handset, but with tablets it’s not the case. Nexus 7 was ultra portable, but there was no HSDPA enabled model. In the case you like to buy a 10 inch tablet, there was no option in Nexus line up.

Now all those problems have been solved. You have a further upgraded Nexus 4 Smartphone, HSDPA enabled Nexus 7 tab and Nexus 10 with massive screen as well. All those devices make a complete family. It’s well branded, well promoted, at the same time well configured.

Finally all those devices have amazingly, unbelievably low price tags. This will be a scary competition to other device manufactures, mainly for Apple. Best part here is lower price tag doesn’t make them cheap devices. They have the best hardware and software configuration you can find in the market.

All those facts show me signs of Nexus branded Android devices dominating the world in near future.

HTC Droid DNA – 1080p Quad Core Android Powerhouse

Smartphone and tablet market was too busy in past few months. All the major manufactures were plaiying their best trump for upcoming shopping season. Apple introduced iPhone 5, 4th generation iPad and brand new iPad Mini. Google released their new Nexus line especially with the brand new Nexus 10 tablet.

The show is not over yet. HTC came out with another amazing addition to their handset family. It’s HTC Droid DNA, a weird name but amazing specs. Today it’s under NOG spotlight.

htc-droid-dna-1080p-quad-core-android-powerhouse-8797818

Insight for HTC Droid DNA

Design

Dimensions: 141 x 70.5 x 9.7mm

Wight: 138g

According to HTC this design is inspired by a super car. The black and red color combination confirms it. It’s a clean single block design with average weight and thickness. Back panel is slightly carved, so you might wobble when you use it on a table top.

I believe its a good time for some manufacture to come up with a different Smartphone design with a major paradigm shift, like Apple did back in 2007. Now they are getting boring and they all look the same for me.

Display

Size: 5.0 inches

Protection: Gorilla Glass 2

Technology: Super LCD 3

Resolution: 1080x1920px

Sharpness: 441ppi

Size of display is going beyond a standard Smartphone and reaching a Phablet. But it’s not only about size, it has bigger resolution as well. It’s a 1080p full HD display with ultra high pixel density. It could give you a great platform from gaming, HD video playback as well as web browsing with sharp text.

htc-droid-dna-display-2763778

The new Samsung Galaxy Note II has a massive 5.5 inches display, but resolution is not improved. It’s still same as previous Galaxy Note and it will dilute the pixel density. HTC Droid DNA solves this problem for good. Hats off for that!

Processor and Storage

Chipset: Snapdragon S4 Pro (APQ8064)

CPU: 1.5GHz Quad Core Krait

GPU: Adreno 320

RAM: 2GB

Internal Storage: 16GB

Sensors: Accelerometer, Gyro Scope, Proximity Sensor, Digital Compass

I have been talking a lot about Snapdragon S4 Platform and how it’s dominating Smartphone market over NVidia Tegra 3. Here we have another example. This configuration will definitely make this a powerhouse second to none.

2GB RAM is a good improvement. The Snapdragon S4 platform support dual channel 533MHz RAM up to 8.5GB/s. So with this huge RAM, HTC Droid DNA will do magic. Internal storage is pretty much standard. Unfortunately it’s none expandable.

Software

OS: Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

UI: HTC Sense 4+

It originally comes with Android 4.1 and down the time you will be able to upgrade it to 4.2. The UI is themed with HTC Sense 4+, an upgrade to previous version. I’m not a big fan of this kind of UI tweaks on top of Android and if you are planning to buy one, don’t have much hope on timely future updates.

Camera

Primary: 8MP, 1080p@30fps

Front Facing: 2.1MP, 1080p@30fps

The camera is pretty much standard for most of the Smartphone you can find today. One cool feature, this can take snap shots while you are recording videos. Front facing camera is majorly improved and it can shoot same quality video as primary shooter.

htc-droid-dna-camera-9350618

Connectivity

2G Network: GSM Quad Band

3G Network: HSDPA

4G Network: LTE

Wi-Fi: 802.11 a/b/g/n

GPS: Yes, A-GPS support

NFC: Yes

Bluetooth: Yes, 4.0

USB: microUSB 2.0

It’s a complete list of connectivity options. You have nothing else to ask for. Depending on your carrier you will be able to enjoy lighting speed LTE connectivity as well.

Battery

Capacity: 2020 mAh, Li-Ion

Wireless Charging: Yes

Battery Life: To be confirmed

The capacity of battery here is disappointing. I was expecting at least 2750mAh battery. This has a full HD display and quad core processor. With all these, it won’t be able to survive at least one day with this battery, unless it has some special power management features.

Warping Up

The hardware spec is amazing but not really unique. If you take a look at Nexus 4, LG Optimus G and Asus Padfone 2 you will be able to find pretty similar internals. But full HD display is the hook here. It easily kick off all the above from competition.

But if you take a look at Oppo Find 5, it has almost similar configuration, even the display. But unfortunately it’s not available in international market.

HTC Droid DNA is going to make a unique mark in HTC product line for sure. This will be ideal for mobile gaming and multimedia applications. You will be able to enjoy ultimate level of details in 1080p display. The physical size is also in its sweet point.

This is a great device to settle for next 2 years. But the only thing you have to consider is its battery life. I’ll keep you posted once I get more accurate data.

HTC M7 – Rumors Round Up

For the past few days I was talking about CES triggered rumors about Nvidia Tegra 4 platform and Sony Xperia Z. There are lot more things to talk about and today I picked HTC M7 one of the most viral news around the web these days.

Previously HTC came out with Droid DNA, a 5 inch 1080p android phone. Seems in M7 they are going to pack the same spec in a smaller body. Let’s go and take a look.

htc-m7-rumors-round-up-2442191

Shape of HTC M7

The display is expected to be 4.7 inch IPS panel with resolution 1920 x 1080 px and 468 ppi of pixel density protected with Gorilla glass 2. I was talking about many forthcoming 1080p displays, but this is the smallest and sharpest so far.

Internals are Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro, the most powerful and popular SoC configured with 1.7 Ghz Quad Core CPU, Adreno 320 GPU, 2 GB of DDR3 RAM and 32 GB probably non-expandable internal storage.

Rumors say that primary shooter has 13 MP sensor, LED flash, HRD, 1080p @ 30fps video and all the other android goodness. Front facing shooter would be around 2 MP.

Connectivity will cover all the latest technologies specially LTE. Many sources say that it’s already been tested on Sprint LTE networks. However there is a high chance for this to come out from all LTE networks at the same time.

Originally it will come with Android 4.1.2 JB themed with HTC sense UI 5.0. It’s expected to be highly performance tuned, user friendly and very light weight. Some rumors says that HTC sense 5.0 is going to get rid of capacitive buttons and take all the controllers on-screen like Nexus device. It would be a great move to utilize the super revolutionary display in a better way.

There are no clear specs about the battery, but I expect it to have at least 2500 mAh battery to power up the 1080p display.

Wrapping Up

There are tons of news about upcoming 1080p mobile displays and we already have few. Once HTC M7 comes out it will be the smallest 1080p display with most number of ppi. For the people who don’t like to carry around a 5 inch huge phone, this would be a great pick for you.

However most of the information about this device is not really confirmed. Only way to confirm these is to wait till CES, which is only few days away.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 – Filling the Gap

Samsung Galaxy Note was a very controversial product by the time it was introduced. It’s a little too big to be a Smartphone and little too small to be a tablet. So people started calling it a ‘phablet’ introducing a new category of devices. Its unique features such as smart pen contributed to its success.

Later on Samsung came up with Galaxy Note 10, a full size tablet and Galaxy Note II with 5.5 inch display. Kindle Fire and Nexus 7 created the trend of 7 inch tablets. Then Apple joined the party with iPad Mini and Samsung also had several 7 inch tablets.

With all these, in Galaxy Note line there was a gap between 5.5 inched Smartphone and 10 inches tablet. Finally Samsung decided to fill that gap with 8 inches Tablet with all the unique features of Note device line. Let’s go and take a closer look in to Galaxy Note 8.0.

samsung-galaxy-note-8-0-filling-the-gap-6789343

Insight for Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0

Design

Dimensions: 210.8 x 135.9 x 8 mm

Weight: 338 g

The design on Galaxy Note 8.0 reminds me of stretched out Galaxy S III. It has glossy plastic build and curved corners. You can find the volume rocker and power button in right edge, microSD slot and microSIM slot in left edge, stereo speakers and microUSB port on bottom edge and 3.5 mm headphone jack in top edge. The smart pen is placed at bottom right corner.

samsung-galaxy-note-8-0-design-1831349

Display

Size: 8 Inches

Protection: n/a

Technology: TFT

Resolution: 800×1280 px

Sharpness: 189 ppi

The display spec is pretty much standard among same level of devices. I think it’s a good time for Samsung to come up with a WOW display for this size of tablet. An AMOLED display with 1080p resolution would be great.

Processor and Storage

Platform: Exynos 4 Quad

CPU: 1.6 GHz // Quad Core // Cortex A9

GPU: Mali-400MP

RAM: 2 GB

Internal Storage: 16/32 GB

Expandable Storage: Yes, microsSD up to 64 GB

Exynos quad platform is configured for maximum performance. This is not really great compared to latest hardware platforms, yet a very powerful configuration for you to run any application available in Play Store smoothly.

Samsung devices are giving you lots of storage space and even expansion and they have done it again with microSD slot support up to 64 GB.

Software

OS: Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean

UI: TouchWiz UI

The device comes with Jelly bean off the box though it’s not the latest version. It’s decorated with TouchWiz UI with split screens, quick access dock and all the other goodness. And good news is, here you can control capacitive buttons with Smart pen.

I’m not a big fan of manufacturer themes. But for this device it’s a must. There are several features that goes with Smart pen that doesn’t come with stock Android.

Camera

Primary: 5 MP // 1080p@30fps

Front Facing: 1.3 MP

The camera is pretty average and for a tablet it’s not really essential to have a rear facing camera. A good quality front facing camera for video calling is all we need.

samsung-galaxy-note-8-0-camera-4531944

Connectivity

Mobile Network: GSM // HSDPA // LTE

Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n

GPS: A-GPS // GLONASS

NFC: n/a

Bluetooth: 4.0

USB: microUSB 2.0

There are two versions of this device, LTE and Wi-Fi. It comes with all the standard connectivity features and you don’t really have anything else to ask for.

Battery

Type: Li-Ion

Capacity: 4600 mAh

Battery Life: ~8h

The battery is pretty big and I think it will be enough to survive several days and at least 8 hours of HD video playback.

Wrapping Up

This would be a good improvement to Note II and gives more space to use Smart pen. It’s not too big like Note 10. So I believe Note 8.0 will have a good market. But I think Samsung is losing its WOW factor. The major reason is, they have too many devices. I hope in future production they will limit to few awesome devices.

HP Slate 7 – Android Kicked out WebOS

HP tried several devices with WebOS before. But they couldn’t become popular and that is nothing to be surprised of. WebOS is no match compared to major competitors like Android and iOS.

But HP is a huge company and they never give up. They have come back to mobile device market with a brand new device, HP Slate 7 powered with Android OS. This device gives me signs that it could be a path breaking tablet in Android roadmap. Let’s go and take a look.

hp-slate-7-android-kicked-out-web-os-8552113

Insight for HP Slate 7

Design

Dimensions: 197.1 x 116.1 x 10.7 mm

Weight: 372 g

This is not the lightest or thinnest compared to other 7 inch tablets. But the numbers are pretty decent. Built is plastic with soft touch feeling. The volume rocker placed on right edge and power button, headphone jack and microSD slot on the top.

Display

Size: 7 inches

Protection: n/a

Technology: LCD

Resolution: 600×1024 px

Sharpness: 170 ppi

Compared to Kindle Fire HD and Nexus 7 this display is far behind. You will definitely miss the sharpness and higher contrast levels.

hp-slate-7-display-9039623

Processor and Storage

Platform: Unknown

CPU: 1.6 GHz // Dual Core // Cortex A9

GPU: Unknown

RAM:  1 GB

Internal Storage: 8 GB

Expandable Storage: Yes, microSD

The platform and GPU is unknown till the moment I started writing this. However it’s suppose to be sitting between Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7. So we can expect a decent level of performance.

Internal storage is pretty low for a tablet but you can always expand it via microSD.

Software

OS: Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

UI: Original

Other: Beats Audio

Great news! This device comes with stock Android. There are no manufacturer installed apps or themes other than beats audio enhancement. And there is a high chance to get early update from HP as well.

Camera

Primary: 3.15 MP // 720p@30fps

Front Facing: VGA

The spec is low, no wow factor there. But Nexus 7 doesn’t have a rear facing camera at all. So even with this spec it will definitely be a competitive advantage.

hp-slate-7-camera-5398127

Connectivity

Mobile Network: n/a

Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n

GPS: n/a

NFC: n/a

Bluetooth: 2.1

USB: microUSB 2.0

HP slate only has a Wi-Fi version. So you will need a Mi-Fi router to go online when you are away from Wi-Fi zones. Other connectivity features are below average. But I think this is good enough for most of the general users.

Battery Life

Type: Li-Ion

Capacity: unknown

Battery Life: 5h of active usage

The biggest question! Size of the battery is unknown yet. But HP says that it will be enough to survive 5 hours of active usage. This is not so good compared to 9 hours of usage in Nexus 7.

Wrapping Up

After going through the spec you might be thinking that there is no single WOW factor to justify purchasing a HP Slate 7. I agree with you but there is one more thing to add. The price tag of this device is $169. It’s even lesser that Nexus 7. With that this whole package could turn in to a WOW device.

It has a rear facing camera, basic connectivity features, decent build and stock Android. Would be an awesome combination for 7 inch tablet and good value for your money.

Sony Xperia Z (Yuga) – Rumors Round Up

The most anticipated and the excited tech event of the year, Consumer Electronic Show is just around the corner. Tech world is waiting for lots of amazing gadgets there. The manufactures are trying so hard not to expose their specs to keep the element of surprise.

No matter what there are tons of news, leaks and rumors about many gadgets to be introduced in CSE around the WWW. One of the most popular one there is Sony’s upcoming “Phablet” Xperia Z with code name Yuga. This is the very first Phablet in Xperia series. Here we go with the rumors round up, predictions and expectations.

sony-xperia-z-yuga-rumors-round-up-5700659

Shape Of Sony Xperia Z

The main attraction of this phone would be its 5 inches, 1920 x1080 px 440 ppi display. Most probably the display technology will be IPS panel protected with Gorilla Glass II. 5 inch displays has become the sweet point in latest 1080p display phones such as Oppo Find 5 and HTC Droid DNA.

The hardware platform will be Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro which is the most popular and powerful chipset available. It will be configured with 1.5 GHz Quad Core CPU, standard Adreno 320 GPU and 2 GB RAM. They might do a difference in expandable storage by letting you plug microSD cards up to 128 GB.

Primary shooter will be a 12 MP one with LED flash, HRD and 1080p@30fps video recording. We have already seen 5 MP front facing camera in Oppo Ulike 2. But this one would be sitting around 2 MP.

When it comes to connectivity this will have all the standard features in Snapdragon Platform including NFC and LTE. Dual band Wi-Fi would be great addition to stand out the competition.

The version of Android comes with this would be 4.1.2 JB. The chances of having 4.2 JB is very lesser in the initial launch. Apparently Sony has decided to remove capacitive buttons and go for Nexus style on screen buttons. Everything would be wrapped up with a dust and water resistant body which is one of the unique features for Xperia series.

Another major concern here is battery life. This gigantic super resolution display will drain out the battery in no time. So I’m expecting at least 2750 mAh battery. Since the phone is huge they have no reason to not to include huge battery.

Wrapping Up

When you look at the hardware configuration, camera, connectivity and OS there is nothing really amazing. There are many other phones in the market which already have all those.

But the hook here would be 5 inches 1080p display. Again it’s not really a brand new feature. So as it seems Sony Xperia will have to work hard to stand out in the competition. Dust and water resistant body would be a good trump card to play.

How to Browse Web Anonymously with CyberGhost?

In various situations you need to surf web anonymously. This comes in handy for security reasons, access web services that are not available in your region and try out personalized websites features for different regions.

Previously I gave you many VPN, such as TunnelBear to surf web anonymously using a different IP address in another location. But the main problem there was limited bandwidth in free version. Today I’m going to give you a VPN with unlimited bandwidth even for free users. It’s CyberGhost, and let’s go get hands on.

how-to-browse-web-anonymously-with-cyberghost-4134175

Getting Started With CyberGhost

  • Go to CyberGhost website and download the VPN software.
  • Install CyberGhost and launch the app.
  • In the first run it will ask you to create an account. Remember to save PUK code for password reset.
  • It will sign you in and take you to main app dashboard. Click connect to VPN there.

cyberghost-connect-8986341

  • It will ask you to close browser. Highly recommend to do it.
  • You may have to wait in queue for few seconds and you will be connected to a randomly selected server.

cyberghost-indication-3612247

  • Now you are anonymous and the web sees that you are from a different location with different IP.

Same as TunnelBear this is tunneling the entire web traffic through VPN, not only web browsing.

Since you are using free service, you are getting only 1 Mbps of throughput yet unlimited bandwidth. And you can’t select the VPN server you are getting connected to, it’s random.

I have tried streaming video and downloading files with CyberGhost. They all worked fine. This would be a great tool for you to have unlimited VPN bandwidth for free.

Microsoft Surface Tablet – New Age of Tablets

The computing experience we had on the desktop is gradually going mobile for last few years. When the time of desktop computing, the retail market leader was Microsoft and there is no doubt. Still they hold the crown and seem they are going to extend them self to mobile computing world as well.

Few months ago Microsoft introduced consumer preview of next version of their famous, dominant desktop OS. It will come to market as Windows 8 with major changes to its core and UI. If you have used Windows phone mobile OS you know how Metro UI looks like. They have extended the same thing to desktop OS as well, having the objective of delivering great touch screen experience going beyond conventional mouse and keyboard.

Quick Catch-up

This is a major turning point in Windows roadmap, like DOS to Windows transition. For that they introduced mouse to deal with graphical UI. Now they are doing it again and came up with prefect platform to run next generation of Windows. It’s named a Microsoft Surface and it’s under Notes Of Genius spotlight today.

Microsoft Surface is looks like any other tablet with large touch screen, but it’s carefully engineered to work with Windows 8. If you have tried Windows 8 on a desktop PC with a mouse and keyboard, you already know it’s not the best way to deal with Metro UI. You must have touch screen to get maximum out of it. That is the whole objective of designing Microsoft surface.

microsoft-surface-tablet-4125224

Device Configuration

Microsoft Surface

  • OS : Windows 8 RT
  • CPU : NvidiaTegra
  • RAM : TBA
  • Storage : 32 / 64 GB , microSD port
  • Display Size : 10.6 Inch
  • Display Resolution : 1366 x 768 px
  • Connectivity: USB 2.0, micro HD
  • Thickness : 9.3 mm
  • Weight : 676g
  • Battery : 31.5 W/h

Microsoft Surface Pro

  • OS : Windows 8 Pro
  • CPU : Intel Ivy Bridge CORE i5
  • RAM : TBA
  • Storage : 32 / 64 / 128 GB, microSDXC
  • Display Size : 10.6 inch
  • Display Resolution : 1920 x 1080 px
  • Connectivity: USB 3.0, micro HD
  • Thickness : 13.5 mm
  • Weight : 903 g
  • Battery : 42 W/h

Specification of Microsoft Surface is promising and it will be able to give good competition to other tablets in the market. The best part here is with Surface Pro you can run usual desktop application like in a desktop. There are very few tablets which can do the same.

Build quality is nothing like any other tablet. Body is made with magnesium alloy like professional DSLR cameras. Hence durability will be significantly high. There is a cover which reminds me the smart cover is iPad. But cover in Surface could do more. There is an inbuilt keyboard as well.

Microsoft surface will be a tight competition to all the other tablets devices in the market such as iPad and Transformer. With the power of Windows platform and uniqueness in Metro UI probably this will be the next big thing in mobile computing.

How to Add Automatic Table of Content in Microsoft Word?

When you are writing a report or any kind of formal document you must include a table of content. The traditional way to include such is type it manually after to finalizing the content of the document. But by any chance if you change the content after you finalize the table of content, you will have to go through the whole document and correct the page numbers again.

Other than that, this kind of manually created table of content could always be vulnerable for human errors. And of course this consume lots of time since you have to go through the entire document and grab headings and relevant page numbers.

To save your time, same as in Automatic Referencing, the mostly used document editor comes in to picture which is Microsoft Word.

Steps to Follow

  • In order to make automatic table of content work, all headings and sub headings in your document must be properly styled using Home -> Styles
  • Before you start writing the document, decide how you want your level 1 headings.
  • Write a sample level 1 heading and style it the way you want it.
  • Then select it and assign the styling to “Heading 1” in Home -> Style -> heading 1 -> Right Click -> Update Heading to Match Selection

heading-style-9239053

  • After that whenever you need level 1 heading, all you have to do is select the heading and click on Heading 1 style. It will automatically get the pre assigned style.
  • You can do the same for level 2 and 3 headings as required.
  • Complete the document applying prepared heading 1, 2 and 3 styles.
  • Then go to the page where you need “Table of content” probably the page that comes after cover page.
  • Go to References -> Table of contents ->Select the table style you need from the drop down menu
  • This will automatically generate the table of content
  • The assigned heading 1, 2 and 3 will be properly organized in table
  • Relevant page number will be automatically generated.
  • Whenever you need to update the table of content, all you have to do is right click on the table -> Update Field. In here you can select the entire table if heading text also has changed. If it’s only change in page numbers, you can simply update only the page numbers.
  • See this file for an example.
  • Hardware: Intel Core i5 2nd Gen // 4GB DDR2
  • OS: Windows 7 Home Premium // 64 Bit
  • Microsoft Office: 2007

Tips

Application of heading styles is really important in here. That’s how automatic table identify what are the items that need to be included in the table and their page numbers. On the other hand this will further reduce the time that you will have to consume to style the text since you can apply it by just one click.

You can always change the heading styles by right clicking on them and going to Modify.

I hope this automatic table of content will save heaps of time you will consume to prepare formal documents. The main advantaged here is you can update the table of content after changing the document content with in a matter of seconds.

If you come to know any other important things about Automatic table of content in Microsoft Word, you are most welcome to share it with us.

3 Important Microsoft Excel Operations

Microsft Excel is a very popular application that comes with Microsoft Office package. The package comes for Win and Mac platforms both. This application belongs to the spread sheet category and cater all your book keeping requirement effectively.

I’m pretty sure that Microsoft Excel is there in your computer. It has become a standard option for a personal computer. Sometimes you might have used Excel for some record keeping, calculation and sorting. But power of Microsoft Excel goes way beyond that.

3-important-microsoft-excel-operations-3826971

Here I’m trying to point you out few of important operations that you can do with Microsoft Excel.

If-else

If-else is nothing new to any programmer. But if you are not having programming background you might have the question “What is that?” If-else is letting you to model the way to make a selection in real world.

Ex: If it’s a rainy day, you bring your rain coat with you. If it’s a sunny day, you keep it at home.

Microsoft Excel support most of the logical operations, so why not If-else. Below example show you how to apply if else in Microsoft Excel.

In here status update is automated using If-else.

=IF(Logical test, “value If true”, “value If false”)

Click here to download the example.

Average

Calculation of average is important when taking most of the decisions, especially in financial context. Excel is giving you once click solution to calculate average for any amount of data you have.

Ex:

= AVERAGE(number1, number2, …)

You can drag and select the entire set of data instead of inserting numbers one by one.

Click here to download the example.

Goal Seek

This is hardly ever used operation in Microsoft Excel among general users, but this could come in handy when you have to think back, in other word reverse engineer.

Ex: You decided to save $5000 in this year and you have a target to increase the amount by another $1000 year by year. If you continue that way in 10 years you can save total of $95, 000. But you need to save $100, 000. Then what should be the starting amount?

Here you have to apply Goal seek, a What-If analysis technique.

  • Click on B12.
  • Go to Data ->What-if Analysis -> Goal seek.
  • If will give you below window.
  • Set 100, 000 as to value and select B2 for By changing cell
  • Once you click OK it will automatically re arrange the data to seek your goal which is $100, 000.
  • In order to make this working accurately, you must have correctly written formula in your Excel sheet.

There is more and more about the power of Microsoft Excel. Keep in touch, there will be a series of articles.
